New Postdoc Onboarding Checklist

Welcome to Stanford!

Prior To Your Inflow at Stanford:

  • Review the Toll of Living in Silicon Valley (Palo Alto/San Jose) and San Francisco Bay Area.
  • If possible, set aside at least i month of living expenses for the Bay Surface area to support yourself until your first payment is disbursed:

  • Plan your commute to campus: Parking & Transportation Services helps plan the all-time route to campus; obtain your Caltrain Go Pass; register your bicycle; find ride matching services for carpools (or purchase a parking let). The free Marguerite shuttle provides transportation on campus and to train stations.

Before Your First Day:

  • Y'all demand a SUNetID for electronic mail and other services. After getting your ID number from your departmental postdoc administrator, you create your SUNetID.
    • After getting your email account, subscribe to the Stanford University Postdoctoral Association (SURPAS) mailing lists
  • Complete your required Patent and Copyright Agreement (SU‐18) form online:
    • In one case you have your SUNet ID, log in to Axess; click the "Patent and Copyright Understanding (SU‐18)" link to review and submit. The link to the SU-18 course is in the lower correct corner of the main Axess page under the heading "LEGAL".
    • You tin can sign and tin view your agreement in the "Academics" tab of the Pupil Services Center.
  • Complete your "Information and Device Attestation".
  • Update your contact information on Axess (REQUIRED)
    • Afterwards getting your SUNet ID, log in to Axess and go to the Student Services Eye.
    • Select "Personal Information" to update addresses, phone numbers, and the Stanford Directory.
    • Updating contact information allows you to receive communications from academy offices (Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Academy Payroll, Educatee Financial Services, etc.).

During Your Showtime Week:

  • Attend a required Postdoctoral Scholar Benefit Orientation
    • Your departmental administrator will annals you for a benefits orientation. Contact them if you accept not received a benefits orientation registration email. Postdoctoral Scholars are required to have medical insurance while at Stanford. Data about plans and enrollment.  (Exist sure to enroll in health benefits within 31 days.)

  • Obtain your Stanford Postdoc ID Card from Campus Card Services. Bring a motion-picture show ID. Courtesy cards for spouses or domestic partners are available at Campus Card Services for a fee.
    • Schoolhouse of Medicine postdocs only: a 2d Stanford photograph ID is needed for access to buildings located in the School of Medicine.
      • Email DL-SecurityServicesAccessOffice@stanfordhealthcare.org for your SoM ID.
  • Register to nourish the next Designing Your Postdoc and Postdoc Social Events.
  • Prepare a banking concern business relationship if needed. Stanford has several banks on campus.
    • International Postdocs: Stanford Federal Credit Union does not require a Social Security Number to set upwards a new account.
  • Check STARS for whatever required trainings or courses.
  • Meet with your Departmental Postdoctoral Administrator/Lab Manager to:
    • Obtain Department/Lab "How To" information
    • Get information and instructions most obtaining and using equipment including phones, pages, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, office supplies, first help kits, emergency kits, and how to request equipment, repairs, and supplies.
    • Acquire how to schedule rooms and equipment
    • Obtain safety information and how to study hazards
    • Complete payroll forms (I-ix, LA-6, W4...) and provide copies of your documents as required
    • Discuss department/lab email lists and required training
    • Sign upwardly for your lab, department, and other groups or organizations' mailing lists for announcements
  • Verify and add your information to your Community Academic Profiles (CAP)
    • In one case in CAP, postdocs are able to access their profiles and add data like enquiry interests, honors and awards, and a photograph.
    • CAP is a tremendous opportunity to publicize your enquiry, publications, and bookish work to the outside world.

    • Stipend-paid postdocs are responsible for quarterly estimated taxes.

    • International postdocs should review the Bechtel International Center website.
    • OPA has general taxation data and includes links to government websites.
    • Seek reputable advisors or pay for services if y'all have questions about tax issues.
